PHYSICAL SCIENCE
includes an introduction to basic chemistry and physics. Topics covered in lab and class include the study of matter, its structure and changes; motion, energy and nuclear science; and elementary chemistry. Basic skills necessary include an understanding of: the metric system; math skills (multiplication, addition, subtraction and division of whole numbers, decimals, and fractions); word problem solving skills; and basic reading skills. Prerequisite: none (1 credit)

BIOLOGY topics include cellular biology, genetics, human anatomy, botany, invertebrate and vertebrate zoology, evolution and environment. Laboratory experience is part of the course Prerequisite: Physical Science Required (1 credit)

BIOLOGY (H) is a course for students who have shown a high degree of achievement in prior science courses. It emphasizes laboratory study of plants and animals and their natural processes. Topics include cellular biology, histology, genetics, basic botany, microbiology, human anatomy, invertebrate and vertebrate zoology, evolution and environment. Teacher approval. (1 credit)

CHEMISTRY I offers a comprehensive introduction to the basics of modern chemistry. Emphasis is placed on atomic structure, the periodic chart and its use, chemical formulas and equations, acid/base/salt study, the gas laws and stoichiometry. Fundamental studies of organic and nuclear chemistry are also included. Prerequisite: Biology. Pre or Co-requisite: Algebra II (1 credit) (Students in Informal Geometry may not schedule chemistry concurrently.)

CHEMISTRY I (H) offers a comprehensive introduction to the basics of modern chemistry but the approach is more in-depth and the emphasis is more on quantitative and problem solving skills. Pre-requisite or co-requisite: Algebra II (H) Co-requisite: Current honors math. (1 credit)

CHEMISTRY II (H) is an elective, second year chemistry course designed to follow the AP guidelines. This course expands on concepts learned in Chemistry I and will further emphasize stoichiometry. Topics covered include acids and bases, oxidation-reduction reactions, solutions, molecular geometry and bonding, kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, nuclear chemistry, and organic and biochemistry. Teacher recommendation. Prerequisites: Chemistry I (H) and Co-requisite: Must be in honors math (1 credit)

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE is an elective science course open to juniors and seniors. The course covers ecology, communities and populations, resource management, agro ecology, pollution and energy. Included in each topic will be a consideration of the environmental ethics, politics, and economics. This course will include lab work, research projects, and presentations. Prerequisites: Biology. Chemistry may be taken concurrently. (1 credit)

PHYSICS is a theoretical and mathematics science in which students learn about motion, universal gravitation, forces, energy, waves, light and electricity. The student learns through participation and experimentation in classroom and laboratory experiences. The student develops and improves mathematical skills by problem-solving applications. Pre-requisite or Co-requisite: Advanced Math I. (1 credit)

PHYSICS (H) is a theoretical and mathematical science which involves critical and higher level thinking skills. Students learn about motion, universal gravitation, forces, energy, waves, light and electricity; the course includes a more in-depth presentation of topics and more mathematical applications. Pre-requisite: Geometry (H) (1 credit)

BIOLOGY II (CP) is a course designed for the student who has a strong interest in science. It is the second level biology course for college preparation. Students explore advanced topics in cellular biology, genetics, ecology, plant and animal anatomy and physiology. Research and advanced laboratory techniques are emphasized. (Open to juniors and seniors) Pre-requisite: Biology I and Chemistry. (1 credit)

BIOLOGY II (H) is a second level life science course for students who plan to major in the life sciences, medical fields, or related professions. Emphasis is placed upon the study of biochemistry, cellular biology, genetics, invertebrate and vertebrate zoology, and human anatomy. (Open to juniors and seniors) Committee approval. Pre-requisite: Biology I (H) and Chemistry (H). (1 credit)

ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY (Please note: This course does not fulfill any TOPS requirements) topics include the basics of human anatomy and physiology of the body with an emphasis on how the body works and why. This course is ideal for college bound students and those interested in pursuing careers in the medical fields. Prerequisites: Biology I and Chemistry I. (1 credit)
