World Languages FRENCH I includes the basic concepts of learning a language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Vocabulary and grammar are taught in the context of real life situations. The cultural focus is placed on contemporary France. Prerequisite: none (1 credit) FRENCH II increases the same skills developed in French I. More emphasis is placed on reading comprehension and on writing paragraphs. Students are encouraged to use the language in a meaningful context by writing and performing skits and by giving presentations. The cultural focus is on the diversity of the francophone world. Prerequisite: French I (1 credit) FRENCH III (H) is a conversational class for advanced students. Emphasis is put on developing the students' listening and speaking skills. Grammar is taught in the context of reading and writing assignments. Prerequisite: An A as final grade for the 8th grade French class and an A on the 8th grade exit exam; an A for the high school French I course. Teacher approval. (1 credit) FRENCH IV (AP) is a college-level French course for juniors and seniors that emphasizes student ability to understand spoken French in various contexts; development of a French vocabulary ample for reading newspaper articles, literary texts, and other non-technical writings; and reasonable fluency and accuracy in both written and spoken French. The course also focuses on the rich heritage of French culture and literature. Students are required to take the national advanced placement exam in order to receive AP credit. Students are assessed a $200 fee for testing and the textbook. Committee approval. Application required. Prerequisite: French III (H) (1 credit) FRENCH V (H) focuses on the rich heritage of French history and literature. The students will read and study selected works of the great writers. One segment is dedicated to the study of francophone literature. In composition, the assignments will help students to develop an analytical writing style. Prerequisite: French IV with a B or better. Teacher approval. (1 credit) SPANISH I introduces students to the Hispanic world of the past, present, and future. Emphasis is placed on pronunciation, on listening, speaking, reading and writing. Vocabulary is learned; greetings are taught in context with cultural anecdotes. Students will also be able to translate from Spanish to English and will learn to read Spanish texts. Prerequisite: none (1 credit) SPANISH II further develops the skills introduced in Spanish I. Grammar is reviewed, and the remainder of the tenses and modes are taught. Reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension skills are emphasized. Prerequisite: Spanish I (1 credit) SPANISH II (H) develops skills introduced in Spanish I at an accelerated rate. Teacher approval. (1 credit) SPANISH III (H) provides a more thorough practice in all verbs and tenses, particularly in the idioms that enrich that language. Students are introduced to the more popular works of Spanish literature, and complete oral and written reports. Teacher approval. Prerequisite: Spanish II with a B average (1 credit) SPANISH IV (H) is a continuation of the study of Spanish literature and a development of speaking, reading and writing skills learned during the first three years.
