 Guidelines for Scheduling 8th Graders

  • Students attending an owner parish parochial school will receive a schedule request form when the St. Thomas More counselors visit each respective school. All other students will receive schedule request forms in the application package.
  • Students will schedule courses according to the guidelines below. The following procedure will be used to determine placement: Standardized tests: Use the average of both 6th and 7th grade scores. (See Sample Below) Grades:

Please note: The student must be registered, i.e., the financial arrangement of tuition and fees must be made, before his schedule of courses can be processed. Placement of qualified students in these particular courses is based on student eligibility and course availability, and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

  1. You and your child must list three alternate-choice courses in addition to the seven main-choice courses. If one or more of the main-choice courses cannot be scheduled, the school will consider the alternates (in descending order, as listed) as main choices without necessarily informing you or the student.
  2. Complete and sign the schedule form. Please make a copy for your records.
  3. If later you would want to request a change in the scheduled courses, the parent must do so by letter to the Academic Assistant Principal by June 1
  4. From June 1 through the opening weeks of the new school year, the school will not consider your request for a change in the schedule unless a change is necessary for one of the following reasons:
    • because of a scheduling error made by the school;
    • or because your child is completing an academic course, which substantially affects some scheduled course, in the summer before the new school year;
    • or because he or she must take a course failed this school year, and which was not available during this summer school session;
    • or because of a change in the student's condition which would seriously and negatively affect his or her performance in a Physical Education course;
    • or because he or she is scheduled for a course with a teacher who is also his or her close relative.
  1. The school might change your child's section (not his course) without your permission even during the opening days of the new school year, in order to balance student enrollment in certain classes.
  2. The school will consider your request for a change in your child's schedule only if the school judges that he or she was improperly placed in a course. Note that poor performance in a course, dislike of the sequence of courses, or dislike of a teacher does not merit consideration for a change. No change of schedule can be made after the second week of school.
